Family: Aluminum Alloy

Overview

Containing roughly 4–4.9% magnesium and 0.4–1.0% manganese, 5083 is an essentially non-heat-treatable aluminium–magnesium alloy that combines moderate strength with excellent cold forming, welding, and spot-welding behaviour and good corrosion resistance. It is relatively inexpensive and can be worked to moderate superplasticity, which has broadened its use in superplastic forming of non-structural parts that avoid heavy forming strains. Strength comes from solid-solution and work hardening rather than precipitation, and the alloy is supplied in tempers such as H116, H321, H111, and H112. Its retention of toughness at low temperatures and resistance to seawater corrosion suit it to shipbuilding, cryogenic and LNG tankage, railway vehicles, and structural plate.

Description

5083 aluminum is essentially a non-heat treatable alloy containing 4-4.9% Mg and 0.4-1.0% Mn. It is a relatively inexpensive alloy with moderate strength, excellent cold forming, welding and spot welding properties, and good corrosion resistance. Aluminum alloy 5083 can be processed to moderate superplasticity, this attractive combination of properties has led to the increasing use of its superplastic forming for a range of parts in non-structural applications that do not involve substantial forming strains. Commonly used temper conditions of the alloy include 5083-H116, H321, H111, H112, etc. The following tables summarize 5083 aluminum properties including chemical composition, physical and mechanical properties, etc. The chemical composition of 5083 aluminum alloy is given in the data sheet below.
