Cobalt — High-Temperature Champion

Cobalt is a hard, lustrous transition metal that excels in high-temperature, wear-resistant, and magnetic applications. As a key ingredient in superalloys, cemented carbides, and rechargeable batteries, cobalt plays a critical role in aerospace, tooling, and the energy transition.

History

Cobalt compounds have been used as blue pigments since antiquity — Egyptian and Persian artisans used cobalt-based glazes to color glass and ceramics as early as 2600 BCE. The element itself was isolated in 1735 by Swedish chemist Georg Brandt, making it the first metal discovered in modern times that had no counterpart known in antiquity. The name derives from Kobold, a German mythological goblin, because miners blamed cobalt ores for spoiling their silver smelts with toxic arsenic fumes. Industrial use accelerated in the 20th century with the development of Stellite wear-resistant alloys (patented 1907) and cobalt-base superalloys for gas turbines.

Key Properties

Cobalt has a density of 8.90 g/cm3, melting point of 1495 degC, and is ferromagnetic with the highest Curie temperature (1115 degC) of any element. It has an HCP crystal structure below 417 degC and FCC above. Tensile strength of pure cobalt is approximately 760 MPa. Cobalt-base alloys like Stellite 6 maintain hardness and wear resistance at temperatures exceeding 800 degC. Cobalt-chromium alloys have excellent biocompatibility and are used in hip and knee implant bearing surfaces.

Industrial Applications

Superalloys and high-temperature alloys (e.g., Haynes 188, L-605) are used in gas turbine vanes, combustion liners, and afterburner components. Stellite hardfacing alloys protect valve seats, pump shafts, and cutting tools against wear, erosion, and corrosion at elevated temperatures. Cemented carbide (WC-Co) cutting tools and mining bits use cobalt as the binder phase — about 15% of global cobalt consumption goes into hard metals. Rechargeable batteries (LCO, NMC, NCA) now consume the largest share of cobalt, driven by smartphones, laptops, and electric vehicles. Cobalt is also used in high-energy permanent magnets (SmCo, AlNiCo).

Advantages

Exceptional hot hardness — cobalt alloys maintain wear resistance at temperatures where nickel alloys begin to soften. Highest Curie temperature of any element enables permanent magnets that operate in extreme heat. Excellent biocompatibility in cobalt-chromium alloys for orthopedic implants. Cobalt binder in cemented carbides provides the toughness needed to prevent brittle fracture of tungsten carbide cutting edges. Excellent resistance to sulfidation in hot corrosive gas environments.

Limitations

Cobalt is classified as a critical mineral — over 70% of global supply comes from the Democratic Republic of Congo, creating supply chain and ethical sourcing concerns. The metal is expensive, with prices historically volatile. Cobalt dust and fumes are toxic and classified as a possible carcinogen (IARC Group 2B), requiring strict workplace controls. Cobalt alloys are difficult to machine due to extreme work hardening. Battery-grade cobalt refining is concentrated in China, adding geopolitical risk.

Recyclability

Cobalt is recyclable from both metallic alloys and battery chemistries. Hard metal (WC-Co) scrap has well-established recycling routes using zinc process or chemical leaching. Battery recycling is the fastest-growing recovery sector — pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes can recover over 95% of cobalt from spent lithium-ion cells. The EU has mandated minimum recycled cobalt content in new batteries starting in 2031.
