Stahl besitzt eine Dichte von etwa 7,85 g/cm³, Aluminiumlegierungen liegen bei rund 2,7 g/cm³ und Titanlegierungen bei ungefähr 4,5 g/cm³. Leichtbauwerkstoffe wie Magnesium mit etwa 1,74 g/cm³ sind überall dort gefragt, wo im Fahrzeug- und Flugzeugbau Gewicht eingespart werden muss. Unmittelbar beeinflusst die Dichte die spezifische Festigkeit, also das Verhältnis von Festigkeit zu Gewicht, das dem Werkstoffvergleich zugrunde liegt.
