Aluminum AISI/SAE

Aluminum combined with copper, magnesium, silicon, or zinc to improve strength and machinability while retaining low density.

Aluminum alloys are divided into wrought (1xxx–8xxx series) and cast (1xx.x–8xx.x) families. Wrought alloys are further classified as heat-treatable (2xxx, 6xxx, 7xxx) or non-heat-treatable (1xxx, 3xxx, 5xxx), depending on whether age-hardening precipitation can strengthen them beyond work-hardening alone.

Designation Guide

The four-digit Aluminum Association system: 1xxx (pure Al, >99%), 2xxx (Al-Cu, aerospace), 3xxx (Al-Mn, packaging), 4xxx (Al-Si, brazing), 5xxx (Al-Mg, marine), 6xxx (Al-Mg-Si, extrusions), 7xxx (Al-Zn, highest strength), 8xxx (other). Temper designations: O (annealed), H (strain-hardened), T (heat-treated) with sub-digits (T6 = solution treated + artificially aged).

Selection Tips

6061-T6 is the all-purpose extrudable alloy for structural frames. 5052-H32 excels in sheet metal and marine applications. 7075-T6 provides the highest strength for aerospace but poor weldability. 2024-T3 offers excellent fatigue resistance for aircraft skins. For die-casting, A380 leads in cost-effectiveness, while A356-T6 provides better ductility and weldability for structural castings.
