Powder Metallurgy

Manufacturing Processes

Определение

A manufacturing technology in which metal powders are compacted into a desired shape and then sintered at elevated temperature to bond the particles into a solid component. It allows near-net-shape production with minimal material waste.

Подробное объяснение

Powder metallurgy (PM) enables production of alloy compositions that are difficult or impossible to achieve by conventional melting, such as tungsten-copper composites and oxide-dispersion-strengthened alloys. Common applications include self-lubricating bearings, gears, structural automotive parts, and cutting tools (cemented carbides). Hot isostatic pressing (HIP) removes residual porosity from PM parts to achieve wrought-equivalent properties in demanding aerospace applications.
