Testing & Standards
Definition
A group of inspection techniques used to evaluate the integrity, properties, and dimensions of materials and components without causing damage or impairing their future usefulness. Common methods include ultrasonic testing, radiography, magnetic particle testing, and dye penetrant testing.
Detailed Explanation
Ultrasonic testing (UT) uses high-frequency sound waves to detect internal discontinuities such as cracks, laminations, and porosity in thick sections. Radiographic testing (RT) uses X-rays or gamma rays to reveal internal defects in welds and castings on film or digital detectors. Magnetic particle (MT) and liquid penetrant (PT) testing are surface and near-surface methods used to detect cracks and seams. NDT is mandatory in aerospace, nuclear, pressure vessel, and pipeline industries where component integrity is safety-critical.
