Testing & Standards

Definition

A destructive mechanical test in which a standardized specimen is subjected to a controlled uniaxial tensile load until fracture, measuring properties such as yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, and reduction in area.

Detailed Explanation

The test is performed on a universal testing machine equipped with load cells and extensometers, generating a stress-strain curve from which all principal tensile properties are derived. Specimen geometry is standardized by ASTM E8 (US), ISO 6892-1 (international), and other national standards, with proportional gauge lengths typically 4× or 5× the specimen diameter. Results are used for material qualification, quality control, and as the primary input data for structural design calculations.
