Overview
AA 2024 is the most widely used of the aluminium–copper alloys, built on 3.8–4.9% copper with magnesium and manganese and heat-treated to very high strength in the T3 or T351 temper. Its excellent strength-to-weight ratio and good fatigue resistance made it the primary skin material for aircraft fuselages, wings, and structural frames. The trade-off is a susceptibility to stress-corrosion cracking in certain environments, which is why it is frequently used in clad form or with protective finishing on airframe structure.
