Overview

AA 2198 is a modern aluminium–copper–lithium alloy (2.9–3.5% Cu, 0.8–1.1% Li) formulated to replace 2024 in fuselage skins. It reduces density by roughly 3–4%, improves fatigue crack-growth resistance, and holds good corrosion resistance compared with older aluminium–copper grades. These gains make it a candidate for commercial aircraft fuselage skins, floor panels, and lower wing skin panels.
